John McCormack

The John Count McCormack Exhibition was previously housed in Athlone Castle. To showcase and celebrate Athlone’s most famous son, it was agreed that an independent and dedicated space within the award winning Civic Centre was an appropriate home for the Exhibition.

Funding arrangements for an ambitious reconfiguration of some of the space in the Civic Centre are being currently being worked through.

In tandem with development of a new home for John Count McCormack (and subject to securing the appropriate funding) Athlone Town Council proposes to commission a piece of public art of the famous Count, most likely to be located on the bastion side of the Civic Square. In additional to the artistic merit of such a piece, it will also help flag for locals and tourists alike the precise location of the proposed John McCormack Experience.

The artefacts and memorabilia collection for ‘The John McCormack Experience’ (working title only!!) have grown hugely with various Societies, individuals and relatives of John McCormack promising to donate wonderful items to the Exhibition now that they know there are plans afoot for a permanent home to celebrate his life and work.

In particular the chair and members of the John McCormack Society have been especially generous of their time and memorabilia-donations on this project.
